Shakespeare's Plays or Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies by William Shakespeare was first published by Jaggard & Blount in London in 1623. What is now called the First Folio was in fact the first collection of plays written by William Shakespeare.
The First Folio is distinguished by an elaborate title page, frontispiece with first-state portrait, complete edition with leaves intact, containing Troilus and Cressida and its prologue, Romeo and Juliet ending on Gg. Roman and italic text types, cursive for headings, various larger romans and cursives in preliminaries. Text in double columns, 66 lines, bold headlines and catchwords, pages box-ruled, woodcut headpieces and tailpieces and initials. The first authorized edition of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare and in terms of editorial theory the closest we have or are likely to have to any final published text authorized by the author, in the sense that it is the published text authorized on the author's death by his friends and closest colleagues, such as John Heminges and Henry Condell, the people who performed his plays on stage.

DE editie van Shakespeare's First Folio
Recensie door: Raymond Scott

As a graduate with a degree in literature, a professional journalist and published author of several New York Times Best Sellers I know good literature and I mean real literature. If you are not familiar with what the First Folio is, the First Folio is considered to be the very first published collection of Shakespeare's plays. It was compiled by William Shakespeare's colleagues John Heminges and Henry Condell back in 1623, the actors that performed his plays on stage during his lifetime. It is believed that 750 copies of the First Folio were published in the 17th century of which only 235 copies still exist and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. holds only 82 of them.I daily use many prestigious editions of Shakespeare and while I enjoy them all, I am particularly fond of this volume that is now the pride of my bookshelf. It is first and foremost a paragon of scholarship, though I admit that it is perhaps of limited interest to many because of Shakespeare's style of writing that is currently unusual, but in reality this book is a true work of art.It has the true look and feel of a 17th century First Folio and the closest you will ever get to owning your own First Folio, perhaps the Best Folio ever.I enjoy reading and owning finely made books and this volume is about as fine as a First Folio of Shakespeare is likely to get. This valuable, collectible hardcover is beautifully bound with titles in gilt and the book in its entirety is a pleasure to own and use.For the real collectors of literature who care for such aspects of their home library this edition will be the very impressive pride of your bookshelf.

Not just the First Folio

As a professional expert I own and use many prestigious editions daily. While I enjoy them all, I am particularly fond of this volume. If you want an edition that has the look and feel of the original 17th century First Folio your best choice is ISBN 9789464437539 of which I recently acquired a copy and that is now the pride of my bookshelf. It is first and foremost a paragon of scholarship, though I admit that it is perhaps of limited interest to many in some of its aspects. The book is large, maybe somewhat unwieldy, and the style is unusual to read by today's standards, but on the whole it is a work of art. This edition is the closest you'll ever get to owning your own First Folio, perhaps the best Folio that will ever be available.I enjoy reading and owning fine books. This volume is definitely as finely made as a First Folio of Shakespeare is likely to get. It is beautifully bound in a fine, contemporary gilted binding and the book in its entirety is a pleasure to own and use.For those readers who care for such things, this very impressive book will soon become the pride of any bookshelf.
